Stopping it outside works, inside it's too late
A curtain or venetian blind sits on the inside of the glass. By then the sun's rays are already through, and the heat they bring stays trapped in the room. External solar shading intercepts them before they hit the glass, and that's the whole difference between a pleasant room and a stifling one.
For windows you do that with screens: a tautly tensioned fabric in front of the glass that blocks the sun but largely keeps the view outside. For a patio or a large south-facing window, an awning is the better choice, because it lays shade over the space itself.

The fabric that retracts itself when the wind picks up
Solar shading you have to operate by hand tends to be used too late. That's why our screens and awnings work electrically, and you can link sensors to them. A sun sensor lowers the fabric when the sun reaches the façade; a wind sensor retracts it in a gust, even when you're not at home.
