Roller shutters with classic slats
The familiar shutter curtain that blacks out completely, in PVC or aluminium and optionally with daylight slots.
PVC or aluminium, and the choice is less free than it seems
PVC is the most affordable material and achieves high insulation values. The colour runs right through the material, so a scratch goes unnoticed. Aluminium is stronger, making it the obvious choice once the shutter gets large. Aluminium slats insulate superbly too, as they are filled with polyurethane foam. Both materials need hardly any maintenance.
Besides the material, you also choose the height of the slat. The larger the window area, the taller the slat needs to be for rigidity. A lower slat means more rows, which changes the look of the façade, and the roll-up diameter helps determine which box size you need.

Completely dark, or just a sliver of light
When closed, classic slats fit tightly together: with notches on PVC, with side locking on aluminium. That is what makes a bedroom truly dark, and it has been proven that we sleep better in a well-darkened room.
If you do not want that everywhere, there are slats with daylight slots. You choose whether you want them and how large the opening is. For a living space that is often the better choice, for a child's bedroom usually not.
